The Assistant Accountant job description can vary greatly dependent on a company’s turnover and the structure and size of the accounts team.   This title can cover someone who is studying either the later stages of AAT or a candidate who is studying CIMA.  It can also cover someone who is qualified by experience (QBE) and who has good solid transactional accounting experience. The salary for an Assistant Accountant will reflect their experience, for example £25K-£28K will have more experience with month end accounting whereas £22K-£25K may be more assisting than producing the accounts.

Assistant Accountant role, duties and responsibilities

An Assistant Accountant will be expected to perform any of the following tasks:

  • Daily bank receipts postings
  • Producing accounts up to trial balance
  • Overseeing/supporting transactional staff duties

  • Assisting with yearly budget preparation
  • Quarterly VAT return preparation
