A Financial Controller may report directly to the Managing Director, Financial Director or Chief Financial Officer and involves overseeing the extensive variety of duties undertaken by the finance department, including managing and developing staff, supporting other departments and identifying areas that require improvement or change.

Job description

  • Production of monthly financial management information pack
  • Budgeting, planning and forecasting
  • Production of yearly Statutory Accounts
  • Corporation Tax, PAYE and VAT returns
  • Weekly meetings with departmental managers to discuss financial performance
  • Offering professional judgement on financial matters and advising on ways of improving business performance
  • Providing information to aid key strategic decision making and formulating business strategies
  • Advising on the financial implications and consequences of business decisions
  • Interpreting and communicating financial data to non-financial managers
  • Liaising with other department managers to put the finances and accounts in context
  • Monitoring and evaluating financial information systems and suggesting improvements
  • Implementing corporate governance procedures, risk management and internal controls

Person Specification

Typical qualities of a successful Financial Controller include:

  • Qualified CIMA /ACCA /ACA
  • Prior experience of managing a finance department
  • Familiar with accounting software
  • Able to implement controls and new processes
